Overview
Business operations involve many interdependent tasks: data gathering, analysis, decision-making, communication, and execution. Often these are handled by humans moving between tools, copy-pasting, and coordinating across systems. The Multi-Agent Business Operator reimagines this workflow as an orchestrated system of specialised AI agents, each responsible for a domain—research, analysis, planning, communication—working together under a coordinator that manages flow and handoffs.
The design reflects a systems view: instead of automating individual tasks in isolation, we model the full operational flow and distribute work across agents that can reason, act, and collaborate. The coordinator ensures agents get the right context, resolve conflicts, and produce outputs that feed into the next step. The result is a system that can handle end-to-end operational workflows with less human intervention, while keeping humans in the loop for high-stakes decisions.
What I Built
I built a multi-agent architecture with a central orchestrator and domain-specific agents. Each agent has a clearly defined role, access to tools (APIs, databases, search), and a protocol for exchanging information with other agents. The orchestrator manages task decomposition, assigns work, handles retries and errors, and synthesises final outputs. The system uses LLMs for reasoning within each agent and for coordination logic.
The architecture is extensible: new agents can be added for new domains (e.g. customer support, financial modelling) without rewriting the core. I also designed observability into the system—logs of agent reasoning, tool calls, and inter-agent messages—so that humans can audit and debug when needed. The system supports both fully autonomous runs and human-in-the-loop checkpoints for sensitive decisions.
Why It Matters
Business operations are ripe for AI orchestration. Many tasks are repetitive, structured, and data-heavy—exactly where LLMs and automation shine. But point solutions (a chatbot here, an automation script there) create fragmentation. A multi-agent operator provides an integrated approach: one system that can handle a complex workflow from start to finish, with specialised capability where it matters.
This project also illustrates how AI-native product thinking differs from feature-based thinking. The unit of value is the end-to-end workflow, not a single feature. The design prioritises orchestration, context passing, and reliability—the plumbing that makes multi-agent systems useful in production. For organisations exploring autonomous operations, this kind of architecture is a blueprint for moving beyond pilots to scalable implementations.
